Helping Hands for Nepal: A Journey of Relief and Education

Who are Helping Hands for Nepal?

Helping Hands for Nepal was created after a devastating earthquake struck the Kathmandu Valley in Nepal in April 2015. With another huge earthquake shortly after, many lives were lost and infrastructure and homes were destroyed. When their friends in Nepal organised a relief effort, two ladies from York decided to help. They joined an international group of volunteers to trek to a remote part of Nepal and build a school.

The wonderful people of Nepal and their culture touched their hearts, and Helping Hands was born. Initially, cashmere pashminas, ponchos, and artisan gifts from Nepal were sold. They were sold through Amadablam Cashmere to support the school. The sales also helped a young girl in Thamel.

Their passion for supporting Nepal fascinated their friends. A team was formed for another project. Delayed by COVID-19, the team set off in 2022 to work with local Nepalese builders and painters. The team improved the environments in two schools, Jalpa Devi and Jalpa Shree in the district of Sindhupalchok District.

In 2024, a small team returned to the primary school in Semjong. Over the years, landslides had badly damaged the school. The team financed a new building through fundraising events. Generous donations also helped. They then set about painting and decorating the school inside and out.
